Auf der Grundlage dieses Stimmungsbildes wurde dem Konventsplenum in der Plenarsitzung am 12./13. Juni 2003 eine überarbeitete Präambelversion vorgelegt. Darin verzichtete das Präsidium auf die Erwähnung der griechischen und römischen Zivilisation sowie den Bezug zur Aufklärung. Der Hinweis auf die kulturellen, religiösen und humanistischen Überlieferungen Europas wurde beibehalten und durch den Zusatz „deren Werte in seinem Erbe weiter lebendig sind" [ergänzt.]
